I've been rereading some of Alphonso Dunn's excellent book "Pen and Ink Drawing - A Simple Guide" this week and working through some of the suggestions he has for improving one's drawing skills.
In the book I came across this wonderful drawing where Dunn is talking about the use of control and chaos in drawing...
In drawing I enjoy control and generally find chaos to be a difficulty which I work to eliminate. But this drawing showed me how there can be great beauty in chaos. I guess I have been aware of that mathematically for many years seeing the beauty in fractal patterns for various sets of numbers. However, to see the beauty in chaos directly on the drawing page was really novel.
I decided to have a go at making a study of Dunn's drawing to see how it felt to work more directly with chaos.
I remember, quite vividly, starting this drawing and having great fear of letting free chaotic lines go straight down onto the page. I tried it in pencil first, which helped a lot. Then I redid it in pen.
Here's my study...
