This week I studied cross contour hatching. It was amazing - I really loved it. I used a range of resources from the internet to begin to learn this technique. One of the best was a video by Alphonso Dunn where he drew an ear...

I decided to study his technique and see what I can do.
I began with a simple sketch...
Next I added some cross contour lines so that I could better see the shape of the ear.
Then I added some basic outlines and my full black shadows.
After that, with all of the above as a guide, I began to draw in proper cross contour lines in pencil.
My next job was to try to draw the lines in ink. I wanted the lines to be thin and close together so I chose to use a dip pen...
...with a Japanese Maru nib which gives a very fine line.
It took some concentration to manage my shaking hands but I was fresh and keen to do it and managed it reasonably well. Here is how the final drawing came out...
Now this is a kind of hatching that I really love! I love the way lines like this can show shape as well as tone. I am going to keep on practicing this technique. I want to take it further.
