I have to admit: I choose mobile games based on their character design. Of course, that's a petty reason but I am not keeping up with the latest mobile games up until recently. Also, my 5-year-old Android phone is no longer functioning well so I stopped checking the Play Store for new games and apps.
However, there is this one time that I decided to check on the Play Store (for what reason, I cannot remember) and sees this detective game with simple but cute graphics. So I checked it out.
It seems that this is not entirely a hardboiled noir/murder mystery game where you gather clues through point-and-click and solve the problem. Well, it has all that plus a supernatural twist. Murder? Mystery? Ghosts? Sign me up!
A Girl in the Window was created by Peru-based independent game studio Darkdome Games and is set in the fictional town of Hidden Town.
The Plot
There is an abandoned house in Hidden Town. The townsfolk insists that they see someone -- a girl -- looking out the window every now and then. Everyone is positive that the house is abandoned because the siblings who used to live there were murdered and their surviving family left 20 years ago.
Enter our protagonist who, like all people in Hidden Town, is drawn to the abandoned house and its aura'. He decides to enter one day to see if there is, indeed, a girl residing in the long abandoned structure.
Typical of haunted places, the protagonist was locked inside the house and will have to go through the entire place looking for clues and solving puzzles to be able to get out.
The Gameplay
Playing the game is simple enough: you step into the shoes of the protagonist and go through the different rooms in the house to find items that will help you get out.
As the story progress, not only did it bring the protagonist closer to freedom but it also uncovers what could have happened to the siblings and who could have murdered them.
A Girl in the Window is a fantastic escape room with complex puzzles that will need a lot of time figuring out. This will also test your memory, your eye for detail, and problem-solving skills. I think you will need a minimum of an hour to finish this without the help of walkthroughs (I finished mine in 2 hours because I suck at some puzzles).
A Rabbit Hole
A Girl in the Window is my introduction to Hidden Town and the rest of the games developed by the studio. I think it is meant to be that way.
Although this is a simple point-and-click game, the puzzles and the storyline makes up for it. A Girl in the Window perfectly captures the unnerving feeling of murder mysteries and hair-raising effect that you only get in good psychological horror stories. This is one rabbit hole that I am glad I fell down to.
